The hand is made up of small bones in the fingers called phalanges and long bones that connect them to the wrist called metacarpals. These bones support a network of attachments of muscles and tendons that allow the hand to function. A fracture occurs when there is enough force on the hand to break any of these bones. Some fractures are simple with the bones still well aligned, while others are unstable where the bones become crooked or misaligned. Generally shoulder arm slings are used to provide support to a fractured hand. Using this for a long time sometimes give discomfort to the neck/ shoulder region. Adi’s idea is to have a waist worn appendage, which can provide support to a fractured hand instead of the sling. The fractured arm would be rested comfortably on the appendage and kept in position by straps .He had to wear a cast and a sling to support his fractured arm. “Wearing the sling for about 16 hours a day along with all the weight of the cast on my left shoulder caused a lot of pain on my shoulder. Project Title Hand Rest for Fractured Hand
Problem statement
In case of hand fracture that require cast, typically doctor advises use of shoulder sling to support the fractured hand. This shoulder sling however causes shoulder and neck pain as the weight of the hand and plaster cast has to borne by the shoulder. I had the misfortune of my hand getting fractured, which required me to wear this shoulder sling for long hours while attending school and that in turn caused pain in my shoulder area.
Solution
The idea is to propose or to alter the contraption so that the burden does not have to be borne by the shoulder, and instead it gets distributed over a wider and stronger back and stomach areas.
